About the Beagle

The Beagle is an English scent hound, bred to follow a trail in a pack. It is a compact dog, about 33 to 41 cm tall and 8 to 14 kg, with long ears, a short coat and a tail with a white tip.

Its nose is incredible and often leads it into trouble. Once a Beagle finds a scent, it can forget everything else.

Temperament: what living with one is like

Beagles are cheerful, gentle and sociable, and they usually get along well with children and other dogs. They are curious and playful.

They are also stubborn and driven by food and scent, so training takes patience and treats. Beagles are vocal: they bay and howl, which can bother neighbours in a flat. They do not like being alone and often follow a scent trail without warning, so keep them on a lead or in a secure area.

Living with a Beagle in Delhi NCR

The Beagle has a shorter coat and copes with Delhi's weather better than heavily coated breeds, but it is still a dog living through 40°C summers. A few habits keep it comfortable:

  • Shade, water and a cool room. Fresh water at all times, and a cool spot (AC or cooler) at the hottest hours.
  • Walk in the cool hours. Early morning and late evening in summer, and check that the pavement is not too hot for paws.
  • Never leave a dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
  • Watch the monsoon. Keep the coat and ears dry and ask your vet about tick and flea control.

A Beagle's short coat copes with Delhi better than heavy-coated breeds, but it still needs shade and cool hours for walks. Because it loves to follow its nose, always keep it on a lead in traffic.

Flats and apartments: A Beagle can live in a flat if it gets about an hour of exercise a day and company, but its howling may need training and neighbours' patience. Check your society's rules on dogs and lifts before you decide.

Grooming and shedding

Beagles are easy to groom: a weekly brush with a rubber curry brush removes loose hair. They shed moderately all year. Clean the long ears regularly, because they trap moisture and infections are common, and trim nails.

A bath every month or so is enough.

Exercise and training

A Beagle needs about an hour of activity a day: walks with sniffing time, games like hide-and-seek treats and some training. A bored Beagle howls, digs and chews.

Never let a Beagle off the lead in an unfenced area. Use a secure fence and check that it cannot squeeze through gaps. Train recall early, although it may never be perfect.

Health: what to know before you choose

Every breed has conditions it is more prone to. For the Beagle, it is better to know these early:

  • Ear infections, because the ears are long and floppy.
  • Obesity, since Beagles eat anything; measure food carefully.
  • Hip dysplasia and back disc problems.
  • Epilepsy and thyroid problems in some dogs.
  • Cherry eye and other eye conditions.

Ask about the puppy's parents and any health records that exist, and book a vet check soon after your puppy comes home. Keeping your dog at a healthy weight and having regular check-ups is the best thing you can do.

Feeding and puppy care

Medium-breed puppies usually eat three meals a day, moving to two as they grow. Ask your vet to recommend a good puppy food and a feeding amount, and measure portions so weight stays healthy.

Your vet will set your puppy's vaccination and deworming schedule. Puppies usually start their vaccines at around six to eight weeks, with boosters a few weeks apart, so ask us which vaccines and dewormers have already been given and when the next ones are due. We will always tell you the puppy's real age and what it has been eating.

Beagle puppy price in Delhi NCR

There is no single price for a Beagle puppy, and be careful of anyone who quotes one without asking questions. What you pay depends on the puppy's age, lineage and records, colour, health checks and current availability. Prices can change from one litter to the next.

Remember the price of the puppy is only the start. Plan for food, vaccines, vet visits, grooming, training, a cool place to sleep and the unexpected. A puppy priced far below what others ask is worth questioning: ask where it was born, how old it really is and what records exist.

Message or call us and we will share what is available for this breed right now, what is included, and what we can and cannot show you. You can meet the puppy by appointment before you decide.

Is a Beagle right for you?

A Beagle may suit you if you want a friendly, medium-sized family dog, can give daily exercise and can accept howling and food-stealing.

You may want a different breed if you live where neighbours dislike barking and howling, want a dog that is reliable off the lead, or are often away. In that case another breed might fit better, and we will tell you honestly.
