About the Poodle
The Poodle is originally a water retriever from Germany and France, and today the national dog of France. It comes in three sizes: Toy, Miniature and Standard. Toy and Miniature Poodles are the most common in flats, while the Standard is a larger dog of about 20 to 32 kg.
The curly coat, elegant look and sharp mind have made the Poodle a favourite family dog for generations. Ask us which size is available when you message.
Temperament: what living with one is like
Poodles are among the most intelligent dogs. They learn tricks and commands quickly, love to please and enjoy games. They are usually friendly, lively and affectionate with their family.
Because they are clever, they get bored without something to do and can become noisy or mischievous. They are sensitive, so gentle, reward-based training works best. Many Poodles bond closely with their person and dislike being alone for long hours.
Living with a Poodle in Delhi NCR
The Poodle has a shorter coat and copes with Delhi's weather better than heavily coated breeds, but it is still a dog living through 40°C summers. A few habits keep it comfortable:
- Shade, water and a cool room. Fresh water at all times, and a cool spot (AC or cooler) at the hottest hours.
- Walk in the cool hours. Early morning and late evening in summer, and check that the pavement is not too hot for paws.
- Never leave a dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
- Watch the monsoon. Keep the coat and ears dry and ask your vet about tick and flea control.
- Winter: a light sweater helps toy and miniature Poodles on cold mornings.
Poodles cope with Delhi's weather reasonably well, especially with a short summer clip. Keep them cool, give them plenty of water and walk them in the cool hours.
Flats and apartments: Toy and Miniature Poodles are well suited to flats, as long as they get daily walks, play and company. Check your society's rules on dogs and lifts before you decide.
Grooming and shedding
Poodle hair keeps growing and tangles easily, so a Poodle needs professional clipping every four to eight weeks and brushing several times a week, ideally daily, to prevent mats. The upside is very low shedding, which many people with allergies prefer, although no dog is completely hypoallergenic.
Clean the ears, trim nails, brush teeth and wipe tear stains regularly. Budget for grooming as a regular cost.
Exercise and training
Toy and Miniature Poodles need about 45 to 60 minutes of activity a day: walks, play and mental games such as puzzle toys and training. Standard Poodles need more.
Start socialising and training early. Poodles pick up commands quickly, so teach good habits from the first week, and keep walks in the cool hours during summer.
Health: what to know before you choose
Every breed has conditions it is more prone to. For the Poodle, it is better to know these early:
- Kneecap problems (patellar luxation) in small Poodles.
- Eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts.
- Dental disease, common in small Poodles; brush teeth regularly.
- Ear infections, because hair grows in the ear canal and humidity makes it worse.
- Hip dysplasia and bloat in Standard Poodles.
Ask about the puppy's parents and any health records that exist, and book a vet check soon after your puppy comes home. Keeping your dog at a healthy weight and having regular check-ups is the best thing you can do.
Feeding and puppy care
Small-breed puppies usually eat three to four small meals a day, moving to two meals as they grow. Ask your vet about a small-breed puppy food and keep an eye on treats, because extra weight is hard on small frames.
Your vet will set your puppy's vaccination and deworming schedule. Puppies usually start their vaccines at around six to eight weeks, with boosters a few weeks apart, so ask us which vaccines and dewormers have already been given and when the next ones are due. We will always tell you the puppy's real age and what it has been eating.
Poodle puppy price in Delhi NCR
There is no single price for a Poodle puppy, and be careful of anyone who quotes one without asking questions. What you pay depends on the Poodle's size (Toy, Miniature or Standard), age, lineage and records, colour, health checks and current availability. Prices can change from one litter to the next.
Remember the price of the puppy is only the start. Plan for food, vaccines, vet visits, grooming, a cool place to sleep and the unexpected. A puppy priced far below what others ask is worth questioning: ask where it was born, how old it really is and what records exist.
Message or call us and we will share what is available for this breed right now, what is included, and what we can and cannot show you. You can meet the puppy by appointment before you decide.
Is a Poodle right for you?
A Poodle may suit you if you want a clever, low-shedding dog, can budget for regular grooming and can give daily play and company.
You may want a different breed if you want a low-maintenance coat, are away from home for long hours, or cannot afford regular grooming. In that case another breed might fit better, and we will tell you honestly.
