About the Pug

The Pug is an ancient breed from China that became a favourite of European royalty. It is a small, sturdy dog, about 25 to 33 cm tall and 6 to 8 kg, with a short, flat muzzle, big eyes, a curled tail and deep face wrinkles.

The Pug was bred to be a companion, and that is exactly what it does best. It wants to be wherever its people are.

Temperament: what living with one is like

Pugs are affectionate, playful and sociable. They enjoy being the centre of attention and usually do well with children and other pets. They are often described as clowns: charming, stubborn and always ready to entertain.

They love food and can become overweight very quickly, which is the most common problem in the breed. They snore, snort and wheeze, and need to be with their family rather than left alone for long periods.

Living with a Pug in Delhi NCR

The Pug has a short, flat face, which makes it harder for the dog to cool itself by panting. Delhi's summer is the biggest risk for this breed, so heat management is not optional:

  • An AC or a strong cooler in summer is a must, not a luxury. Heat stroke can happen fast.
  • Walk only in the cool of early morning or late evening, keep walks short and stop if the breathing becomes loud or laboured.
  • Use a harness, not a collar, so the neck and airway are not under pressure.
  • Never leave the dog in a parked car or on a hot balcony, and avoid hard play, hot vehicles and very humid days.
  • Know the warning signs: heavy noisy panting, drooling, very red or blue-grey gums, weakness. Cool the dog gently and go to a vet at once.
  • Winter: a light sweater helps on cold mornings.

Delhi's summer is the biggest challenge for a Pug. A short, flat face makes it harder to cool down by panting, and heat stroke can come on quickly. An air-conditioned or well-cooled room is essential, not optional.

Flats and apartments: A Pug is a great flat dog because it needs little space and moderate exercise, provided the home is kept cool. Check your society's rules on dogs and lifts before you decide.

Grooming and shedding

A Pug's short coat is easy to brush once or twice a week, but Pugs shed more than people expect, so expect fur on clothes and furniture. Clean the face wrinkles regularly and dry them well, because moisture in the folds causes skin infections.

Check the eyes, trim nails, clean the ears and brush teeth. Do not bathe too often, since this can dry the skin.

Exercise and training

A Pug needs about 30 to 45 minutes of gentle activity a day, split into short walks and indoor play. Never exercise a Pug hard in heat, and stop if the breathing becomes loud or laboured.

Weight control is essential. Measure meals, limit treats and keep your Pug lean, because extra weight makes breathing, heat tolerance and joints worse. Use a harness, not a collar.

Health: what to know before you choose

Every breed has conditions it is more prone to. For the Pug, it is better to know these early:

  • Breathing problems (brachycephalic airway syndrome) from the short muzzle, worse in heat.
  • Eye injuries and ulcers, because the eyes are prominent.
  • Skin fold infections in the face wrinkles.
  • Obesity, very common and very harmful in Pugs.
  • Hip problems and a brain inflammation called Pug dog encephalitis affect some Pugs.

Ask about the puppy's parents and any health records that exist, and book a vet check soon after your puppy comes home. Keeping your dog at a healthy weight and having regular check-ups is the best thing you can do.

Feeding and puppy care

Small-breed puppies usually eat three to four small meals a day, moving to two meals as they grow. Ask your vet about a small-breed puppy food and keep an eye on treats, because extra weight is hard on small frames.

Your vet will set your puppy's vaccination and deworming schedule. Puppies usually start their vaccines at around six to eight weeks, with boosters a few weeks apart, so ask us which vaccines and dewormers have already been given and when the next ones are due. We will always tell you the puppy's real age and what it has been eating.

Pug puppy price in Delhi NCR

There is no single price for a Pug puppy, and be careful of anyone who quotes one without asking questions. What you pay depends on the puppy's age, lineage and records, colour, health checks and current availability. Prices can change from one litter to the next.

Remember the price of the puppy is only the start. Plan for food, vaccines, vet visits, grooming, a cool place to sleep and the unexpected. A puppy priced far below what others ask is worth questioning: ask where it was born, how old it really is and what records exist.

Message or call us and we will share what is available for this breed right now, what is included, and what we can and cannot show you. You can meet the puppy by appointment before you decide.

Is a Pug right for you?

A Pug may suit you if you want a cuddly, sociable companion, can keep the home cool in summer and can control the dog's weight.

You may want a different breed if you cannot keep a room cool in summer, want an athletic dog, or dislike snoring and shedding. In that case another breed might fit better, and we will tell you honestly.

Good questions

Pug puppies: frequently asked questions

Do Pugs shed?

Yes, quite a lot for a short-coated dog. Brushing once or twice a week helps.

Why do Pugs snore and snort?

Because of the short, flat muzzle. Some noise is normal, but loud or laboured breathing, especially in heat, needs a vet.

How do I keep a Pug healthy?

Keep it cool in summer, keep its weight lean, clean and dry face folds, use a harness and have regular vet check-ups.

How much is a Pug puppy in Delhi NCR?

The price depends on the puppy's age, lineage and records, colour, health checks and current availability, so it changes between litters. Message or call Waggleberry and we will tell you what is available now and what is included before you decide.

Can a Pug live in an apartment in Delhi?

A Pug is a great flat dog because it needs little space and moderate exercise, provided the home is kept cool. Check your housing society's rules before you choose.

Can the Pug handle Delhi's heat?

Heat is a real risk for flat-faced breeds, which overheat quickly. You need an AC or strong cooler in summer, short walks in the cool hours and a harness. If your home cannot be kept cool, this is not the right breed.

Is the Pug good for first-time owners?

Often yes. Pugs are easy and affectionate, which suits beginners. Heat, breathing, weight and skin-fold care are the main jobs.
