About the Siberian Husky

The Siberian Husky was bred by the Chukchi people of Siberia to pull sleds over long distances in freezing weather. It is a medium-sized, athletic dog, about 51 to 60 cm tall and 16 to 27 kg, with a dense double coat and often blue or mixed-colour eyes.

It was built for stamina and cold. Everything about it, from the coat to the energy, is designed for the Arctic rather than for a Delhi summer.

Temperament: what living with one is like

Huskies are friendly, outgoing and playful. They are not guard dogs, because they welcome strangers, and they usually get along with children and other dogs.

They are also independent and mischievous. They howl, dig and are famous escape artists, clearing fences and slipping through gates. They have a strong prey drive and should be kept on a lead in public. Without enough exercise and company, they become loud and destructive.

Living with a Siberian Husky in Delhi NCR

Heat is the main question for Siberian Husky owners in Delhi NCR. A thick coat is made for cold climates, and Delhi summers regularly cross 40°C. Many families keep the breed happily, but only with a few habits:

  • Keep them cool indoors. A room with an AC or a good cooler is strongly recommended from April to September.
  • Walk at the right time. Early morning and late evening in summer. Skip midday walks and check that the pavement is not too hot for their paws.
  • Always have fresh water available, and never leave a dog in a parked car.
  • Do not shave the coat to cool the dog. The coat insulates against heat as well as cold, so regular brushing and a cool room do more good.
  • Watch the monsoon. Humidity can bring skin problems, ticks and fleas, so keep the coat dry and ask your vet about tick and flea control.

Delhi is a hard place for a Husky. The thick coat and high energy make the long summer risky, so a cool, air-conditioned room is essential, and all exercise must happen in the early morning or late evening. Never leave a Husky outdoors in the heat.

Flats and apartments: A Husky can live in a flat only if it is cooled in summer and gets a great deal of exercise, and the home is secure enough to stop escapes. Check your society's rules on dogs and lifts before you decide.

Grooming and shedding

Huskies shed all year and blow their undercoat heavily once or twice a year, with huge amounts of fur coming out. Brush two to three times a week, and daily during the blow, with an undercoat rake. Huskies are naturally clean and have little odour.

Never shave the coat. Trim nails, check ears and brush teeth.

Exercise and training

A Husky needs about two hours of vigorous exercise a day: running, long walks, play and mental work. In Delhi, plan this for the coolest hours of the day.

Use a secure fence at least 1.8 m high, check for gaps and keep the dog on a lead outside. Train recall early, though it may never be reliable. Keep puppy exercise gentle while joints develop.

Health: what to know before you choose

Every breed has conditions it is more prone to. For the Siberian Husky, it is better to know these early:

  • Eye conditions such as cataracts, corneal problems and progressive retinal atrophy.
  • Hip dysplasia in some dogs.
  • Hypothyroidism and skin problems (zinc-responsive dermatosis).
  • Heat stress, a major risk in hot climates without proper cooling.
  • Weight and joint care as the dog ages.

Ask about the puppy's parents and any health records that exist, and book a vet check soon after your puppy comes home. Keeping your dog at a healthy weight and having regular check-ups is the best thing you can do.

Feeding and puppy care

Large-breed puppies grow fast, so ask your vet about a food made for large-breed puppies and an appropriate feeding amount. Young puppies usually eat three to four meals a day, moving to two as they grow. Avoid overfeeding to make a puppy bigger or faster: slow, steady growth is kinder to growing joints.

Your vet will set your puppy's vaccination and deworming schedule. Puppies usually start their vaccines at around six to eight weeks, with boosters a few weeks apart, so ask us which vaccines and dewormers have already been given and when the next ones are due. We will always tell you the puppy's real age and what it has been eating.

Siberian Husky puppy price in Delhi NCR

There is no single price for a Siberian Husky puppy, and be careful of anyone who quotes one without asking questions. What you pay depends on the puppy's age, lineage and records, colour and eye colour, health checks and current availability. Prices can change from one litter to the next.

Remember the price of the puppy is only the start. Larger dogs eat more, need bigger beds and more medication, and cost more at the vet. Plan for food, vaccines, vet visits, grooming, training, a cool place to sleep and the unexpected. A puppy priced far below what others ask is worth questioning: ask where it was born, how old it really is and what records exist.

Message or call us and we will share what is available for this breed right now, what is included, and what we can and cannot show you. You can meet the puppy by appointment before you decide.

Is a Siberian Husky right for you?

A Siberian Husky may suit you if you are very active, can air-condition a room in summer, have a secure home and can give hours of daily exercise.

You may want a different breed if you cannot cool a room in summer, want a calm or guard dog, or cannot secure the home against escapes. In that case another breed might fit better, and we will tell you honestly.

Good questions

Siberian Husky puppies: frequently asked questions

Can a Siberian Husky live in Delhi?

It is possible, but only with a properly cooled home, early morning and late evening exercise and a very committed owner. Many families find Delhi's summer very hard for a Husky.

Do Huskies shed a lot?

Yes, heavily, with big coat blows once or twice a year. Brush several times a week and never shave the coat.

Can a Husky be off the lead?

It is risky. Huskies have a strong prey drive and love to run, so they should be kept on a lead or in a secure fenced area.

How much is a Siberian Husky puppy in Delhi NCR?

The price depends on the puppy's age, lineage and records, colour and eye colour, health checks and current availability, so it changes between litters. Message or call Waggleberry and we will tell you what is available now and what is included before you decide.

Can a Siberian Husky live in an apartment in Delhi?

A Husky can live in a flat only if it is cooled in summer and gets a great deal of exercise, and the home is secure enough to stop escapes. Check your housing society's rules before you choose.

Can the Siberian Husky handle Delhi's heat?

Many live in Delhi NCR, but the thick coat means a cool room (AC or cooler) in summer, walks in the early morning or late evening, and plenty of water. Do not shave the coat.

Is the Siberian Husky good for first-time owners?

We usually recommend this breed for experienced owners. Huskies are friendly but demanding: huge exercise needs, heavy shedding, escaping and heat make them hard for beginners in Delhi.
