About the Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever was bred in Scotland in the 1800s to retrieve birds for hunters, which explains two things you will notice quickly at home: a soft mouth that loves carrying things, and a strong wish to stay close to its people. Today it is a favourite family dog across Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida, and a common choice for first-time owners who are ready to put in the time.

Adults stand about 51 to 61 cm tall and weigh roughly 25 to 34 kg, with males usually a little bigger than females. The coat ranges from pale cream to deep gold. It is thick, water-resistant and made for cooler weather than Delhi gives us in summer, which is why the climate section below matters.

Temperament: friendly, patient and people-loving

Golden Retrievers are known for being gentle, patient and sociable with children, other dogs and visitors. Most are eager to learn and respond well to praise, play and treats, so training is usually a joy compared with more independent breeds.

Two honest notes. First, they do not like being left alone for long hours and can become bored, noisy or destructive without company and exercise. Second, they are friendly to almost everyone, so they are not a guard dog. If you want an alert watchdog, a Golden Retriever is the wrong choice; if you want a happy family companion, it is hard to beat.

Puppies are mouthy and bouncy until around two years of age. Expect chewing, jumping up and a lot of energy while they grow, and plan for gentle, consistent training from the first week.

Living with a Golden Retriever in Delhi NCR

The biggest question we hear is about heat. A Golden Retriever's thick double coat suits cool climates, and Delhi summers regularly cross 40°C. Many families in the region keep Goldens very happily, but they do it with a few habits:

  • Keep them cool indoors. A room with an AC or a good cooler is strongly recommended from April to September.
  • Walk at the right time. Early morning and late evening in summer. Avoid midday walks, and check that the pavement is not too hot for their paws.
  • Always have fresh water available, and never leave a dog in a parked car.
  • Watch the monsoon. Humidity can bring skin problems, hot spots, ear infections, ticks and fleas, so keep the coat dry and talk to your vet about tick and flea control.
  • Do not shave the coat to cool the dog. The coat helps protect against heat and sun. Regular brushing and a cool room do more good.

Flats and apartments: a Golden Retriever can live in an apartment if it gets enough walks and play every day and is not left alone for long periods. A house with a garden helps but is not a must. Check your society's rules on dogs and lifts before you decide.

Grooming and shedding

Goldens shed all year, and more heavily when the season changes. Brush two to four times a week, and daily during heavy shedding, to keep the coat tidy and reduce hair on your sofa. A bath every few weeks (or when needed) with a dog shampoo is enough, followed by thorough drying, especially in the monsoon.

Also plan for regular nail trims, teeth cleaning and checking the ears, because floppy ears trap moisture. If you or someone at home has a dog-hair allergy or asthma, think carefully before choosing a heavy shedder.

Exercise and training

An adult Golden Retriever needs about one to two hours of activity a day: walks, fetch, and some mental play such as simple training games or scent games. A bored Golden is a chewing Golden.

Puppies are different. Large-breed puppies are still growing until about 12 to 18 months, so avoid long runs, repeated stair climbing and hard jumping on slippery floors while the joints develop. Short, gentle walks and free play are better, and your vet can advise on the right amount for your puppy.

Start socialising early: meet different people, hear different sounds and, once your vet says it is safe, meet other vaccinated dogs. Reward-based training works very well with this breed.

Health: what to know before you choose

Golden Retrievers are generally healthy, active dogs, but like many large breeds they can be prone to certain conditions. It is better to know these early:

  • Hip and elbow dysplasia, joint conditions that can affect movement later in life.
  • Eye problems such as cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy.
  • Skin allergies and ear infections, more common in humid weather.
  • Heart conditions and a higher cancer risk than many other breeds.
  • Weight gain. Goldens love food and gain weight easily, which puts extra strain on joints.

Ask about the puppy's parents and any health records that exist, and book a vet check soon after your puppy comes home. Keeping your dog lean, brushed and regularly checked is the single best thing you can do.

Feeding and puppy care

Large-breed puppies grow fast, so ask your vet about a food made for large-breed puppies and an appropriate feeding amount. Young puppies usually eat three to four small meals a day, moving to two meals as they grow. Avoid overfeeding to make a puppy bigger or faster: slow, steady growth is kinder to growing joints.

Your vet will set your puppy's vaccination and deworming schedule. Puppies usually start their vaccines at around six to eight weeks, with boosters spaced a few weeks apart, so ask us which vaccines and dewormers have already been given and when the next ones are due. We will always tell you the puppy's real age and what it has been eating, so the move to your home is gentle.

Golden Retriever puppy price in Delhi NCR

There is no single price, and be careful of anyone who quotes one without asking questions. What you pay depends on the puppy's age, lineage and records, colour, health checks and current availability, and prices can change from one litter to the next.

Remember the price of the puppy is only the start. Plan for food, vaccines, vet visits, grooming, a cool place to sleep and the unexpected. A puppy that is priced far below what others ask is worth questioning: ask where it was born, how old it really is and what records exist.

Message or call us and we will share what is available for this breed right now, what is included, and what we can and cannot show you. You can meet the puppy by appointment before you decide.

Is a Golden Retriever right for you?

A Golden Retriever may suit you if you want a friendly family dog, can give daily exercise and company, can keep your home cool in summer, and are happy to brush a lot.

You may want a different breed if you are away from home most of the day, want a guard dog, or cannot keep the dog cool through the Delhi summer. In that case a smaller, lower-shedding or less heavily coated breed might fit better, and we will tell you honestly.

Good questions

Golden Retriever puppies: frequently asked questions

How much is a Golden Retriever puppy in Delhi NCR?

The price depends on the puppy's age, lineage and records, colour, health checks and availability, so it changes between litters. Message or call Waggleberry and we will tell you what is available now and what is included before you decide.

Can a Golden Retriever live in an apartment in Delhi?

Yes, if it gets enough daily exercise and company, is kept cool in summer and is not left alone for long hours. Check your housing society's rules on dogs before you choose.

Can Golden Retrievers handle Delhi's heat?

Many live well in Delhi NCR, but their thick double coat means they need a cool room (AC or cooler) in summer, walks in early morning or late evening, and plenty of water. Do not shave the coat.

Do Golden Retrievers shed a lot?

Yes. They shed all year and more heavily when the season changes. Brushing two to four times a week, and daily during heavy shedding, helps.

Are Golden Retrievers good with children?

They are known for being gentle and patient, and are a popular family dog. As with every dog, children and puppies should always be supervised, and children should be taught how to handle a puppy gently.

How long do Golden Retrievers live?

Usually around 10 to 12 years. Healthy weight, regular vet care and enough exercise all help.

Are Golden Retrievers good for first-time owners?

Often yes, because they are friendly and eager to learn. But they need time, exercise, grooming and a cool home, so be sure you can offer those before you say yes.
