About the Cane Corso

The Cane Corso is an Italian mastiff breed, historically used for guarding farms and property, hunting large game and driving cattle. It is a large, muscular dog, about 60 to 68 cm tall and 40 to 50 kg, with a short, dense coat.

It has a commanding presence, and its strength and protective instinct are the result of its history as a guardian.

Temperament: what living with one is like

Cane Corsos are intelligent, loyal and protective. At home with their family they can be affectionate and calm, but they are naturally watchful of strangers and strong-willed.

They need early, extensive socialisation, firm, fair and consistent training and a confident owner who can control a very strong dog. They are not suitable for first-time owners, and they need supervision around children and other pets.

Living with a Cane Corso in Delhi NCR

The Cane Corso has a shorter coat and copes with Delhi's weather better than heavily coated breeds, but it is still a dog living through 40°C summers. A few habits keep it comfortable:

  • Shade, water and a cool room. Fresh water at all times, and a cool spot (AC or cooler) at the hottest hours.
  • Walk in the cool hours. Early morning and late evening in summer, and check that the pavement is not too hot for paws.
  • Never leave a dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
  • Watch the monsoon. Keep the coat and ears dry and ask your vet about tick and flea control.

A Cane Corso's short coat copes with Delhi better than thick coats, but its heavy body needs care in summer: a cool room, plenty of water and exercise only in the early morning or late evening.

Flats and apartments: A Cane Corso is a large, powerful dog that needs space, so it is better suited to a house with a secure yard than a flat. Check your society's rules on dogs and lifts before you decide.

Grooming and shedding

The short coat needs a weekly brush, and more during seasonal shedding. Bathe occasionally and check the skin folds around the face and ears.

Trim nails and brush teeth. Grooming is easy, but a dog this big has high food and vet costs.

Exercise and training

A Cane Corso needs about one to two hours of activity a day: walks, play and training. It needs a secure fence and a lead in public.

Socialise from the first weeks and train with a professional if possible. As a large breed puppy, avoid hard exercise, jumping and long runs while the joints develop.

Health: what to know before you choose

Every breed has conditions it is more prone to. For the Cane Corso, it is better to know these early:

  • Hip dysplasia and elbow problems.
  • Bloat (gastric torsion), an emergency in deep-chested dogs.
  • Eyelid problems such as entropion, ectropion and cherry eye.
  • Heart conditions in some dogs.
  • Epilepsy in some lines.

Ask about the puppy's parents and any health records that exist, and book a vet check soon after your puppy comes home. Keeping your dog at a healthy weight and having regular check-ups is the best thing you can do.

Breed rules and restrictions

Rules about powerful or large guardian breeds can differ by city, municipality and housing society, and can change over time. Some societies restrict certain breeds in lifts or common areas, and some areas may ask for registration or a muzzle in public. Check the current rules for your area and your society before you choose, and ask us if you are unsure. A Cane Corso is a decision for a committed owner who can train and safely control a strong dog.

Feeding and puppy care

Large-breed puppies grow fast, so ask your vet about a food made for large-breed puppies and an appropriate feeding amount. Young puppies usually eat three to four meals a day, moving to two as they grow. Avoid overfeeding to make a puppy bigger or faster: slow, steady growth is kinder to growing joints. Feed several smaller meals, and avoid hard exercise around mealtimes.

Your vet will set your puppy's vaccination and deworming schedule. Puppies usually start their vaccines at around six to eight weeks, with boosters a few weeks apart, so ask us which vaccines and dewormers have already been given and when the next ones are due. We will always tell you the puppy's real age and what it has been eating.

Cane Corso puppy price in Delhi NCR

There is no single price for a Cane Corso puppy, and be careful of anyone who quotes one without asking questions. What you pay depends on the puppy's age, lineage and records, colour, health checks and current availability. Prices can change from one litter to the next.

Remember the price of the puppy is only the start. Larger dogs eat more, need bigger beds and more medication, and cost more at the vet. Plan for food, vaccines, vet visits, grooming, training, a cool place to sleep and the unexpected. A puppy priced far below what others ask is worth questioning: ask where it was born, how old it really is and what records exist.

Message or call us and we will share what is available for this breed right now, what is included, and what we can and cannot show you. You can meet the puppy by appointment before you decide.

Is a Cane Corso right for you?

A Cane Corso may suit you if you are an experienced owner with a secure home, can train and socialise a powerful dog and can control it safely at all times.

You may want a different breed if you are a first-time owner, have small children or other small pets, or are unsure about local rules for this breed. In that case another breed might fit better, and we will tell you honestly.
