About the English Bulldog
The Bulldog, also known as the English Bulldog, was originally bred in England for bull-baiting, a cruel sport now banned. Today it is a gentle companion. It is a stocky, muscular dog, about 31 to 40 cm tall and 18 to 25 kg, with a large head, a wrinkled face and a short, flat muzzle.
The features that make the breed so distinctive are also the cause of many of its health problems.
Temperament: what living with one is like
English Bulldogs are calm, gentle and affectionate. They are usually good with children and other pets, are not big barkers and are happy to lounge on the sofa. They can be stubborn, so training needs patience.
They snore, wheeze and drool, and they do not enjoy exercise much. They love to be with family and do not like being left alone for long.
Living with a English Bulldog in Delhi NCR
The English Bulldog has a short, flat face, which makes it harder for the dog to cool itself by panting. Delhi's summer is the biggest risk for this breed, so heat management is not optional:
- An AC or a strong cooler in summer is a must, not a luxury. Heat stroke can happen fast.
- Walk only in the cool of early morning or late evening, keep walks short and stop if the breathing becomes loud or laboured.
- Use a harness, not a collar, so the neck and airway are not under pressure.
- Never leave the dog in a parked car or on a hot balcony, and avoid hard play, hot vehicles and very humid days.
- Know the warning signs: heavy noisy panting, drooling, very red or blue-grey gums, weakness. Cool the dog gently and go to a vet at once.
Delhi's summer is dangerous for English Bulldogs. The short, narrow airway and heavy body make it very hard for the dog to cool itself, and heat stroke can come on fast. This breed must have an air-conditioned room in summer and should not be exercised in heat.
Flats and apartments: An English Bulldog is happy in a flat as it needs little exercise, but the home must have air conditioning in summer. Check your society's rules on dogs and lifts before you decide.
Grooming and shedding
The short coat needs a weekly brush. The important job is cleaning and drying the deep skin folds on the face and tail every day, because moisture in the folds causes infections. Clean the ears, trim nails and brush teeth.
Bath only when needed with a gentle shampoo and dry the folds well.
Exercise and training
An English Bulldog needs about 20 to 40 minutes of very gentle activity a day. Walk only in the cool hours, keep walks short and stop if the breathing becomes loud or laboured.
Keep your Bulldog lean, since weight makes breathing and joints much worse. Use a harness, not a collar, and avoid hot pavements and rough play.
Health: what to know before you choose
Every breed has conditions it is more prone to. For the English Bulldog, it is better to know these early:
- Breathing problems (brachycephalic airway syndrome) from the short muzzle.
- Skin fold infections and allergies.
- Hip and elbow dysplasia and kneecap problems.
- Eye problems such as cherry eye and dry eye.
- Difficult births: most English Bulldogs are born by C-section, which affects cost and availability.
Ask about the puppy's parents and any health records that exist, and book a vet check soon after your puppy comes home. Keeping your dog at a healthy weight and having regular check-ups is the best thing you can do.
Feeding and puppy care
Medium-breed puppies usually eat three meals a day, moving to two as they grow. Ask your vet to recommend a good puppy food and a feeding amount, and measure portions so weight stays healthy.
Your vet will set your puppy's vaccination and deworming schedule. Puppies usually start their vaccines at around six to eight weeks, with boosters a few weeks apart, so ask us which vaccines and dewormers have already been given and when the next ones are due. We will always tell you the puppy's real age and what it has been eating.
English Bulldog puppy price in Delhi NCR
There is no single price for a English Bulldog puppy, and be careful of anyone who quotes one without asking questions. What you pay depends on the puppy's age, lineage and records, colour, health checks and current availability. Prices can change from one litter to the next.
Remember the price of the puppy is only the start. Plan for food, vaccines, vet visits, grooming, training, a cool place to sleep and the unexpected. A puppy priced far below what others ask is worth questioning: ask where it was born, how old it really is and what records exist.
Message or call us and we will share what is available for this breed right now, what is included, and what we can and cannot show you. You can meet the puppy by appointment before you decide.
Is a English Bulldog right for you?
A English Bulldog may suit you if you want a calm, gentle dog, can air-condition the home in summer and can afford regular and sometimes costly veterinary care.
You may want a different breed if you cannot keep the home cool in summer, want an active dog, or are not prepared for higher vet bills and a shorter life span. In that case another breed might fit better, and we will tell you honestly.
