About the Chihuahua
The Chihuahua is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua and is the smallest of all breeds, usually weighing 1.5 to 3 kg and standing 15 to 23 cm. It comes in a smooth-coat and a long-coat variety.
Despite its size, it is a confident, alert dog. It is also one of the longest-lived breeds, often reaching 14 to 16 years with good care.
Temperament: what living with one is like
Chihuahuas are loyal, lively and often devoted to one person. They are alert, bold and can be very vocal. Without training and socialisation they may become nervous, snappy with strangers or bossy with larger dogs.
They are not ideal for homes with very young children, because a Chihuahua is easily hurt and may snap if handled roughly. With calm, consistent training and gentle handling, they are charming companions.
Living with a Chihuahua in Delhi NCR
Small and toy dogs heat up and cool down quickly, so Delhi's hot summers and cold winter mornings both need a little planning:
- Summer: a cool room, fresh water, and walks only in the cool hours. Little paws burn easily on hot pavement.
- Winter: a warm bed away from draughts and a light sweater on cold mornings and evenings.
- Never leave a small dog in a parked car or in direct sun on a balcony.
- Monsoon: dry the coat and paws well, and ask your vet about tick and flea control.
Chihuahuas feel both extremes: they overheat in Delhi's summer and shiver in winter. Keep a cool room and fresh water in summer, and give a warm bed and a sweater in winter. Early puppies also need regular small meals.
Flats and apartments: A Chihuahua is ideal for a flat because it needs very little space, but barking and fragility need attention. Check your society's rules on dogs and lifts before you decide.
Grooming and shedding
Smooth-coat Chihuahuas need only a weekly brush, while long-coats need brushing two to three times a week. Bathe every few weeks, and keep the ears clean and nails trimmed.
Dental care matters a lot, because tiny mouths get crowded teeth and gum disease early. Brush teeth regularly and book dental checks.
Exercise and training
A Chihuahua needs about 20 to 40 minutes of gentle activity a day: short walks and play indoors. Use a harness, not a collar, to protect the neck and windpipe.
Avoid jumping from furniture, and watch for hurt from larger dogs. Train and socialise from the first weeks, including calm handling by visitors.
Health: what to know before you choose
Every breed has conditions it is more prone to. For the Chihuahua, it is better to know these early:
- Kneecap problems (patellar luxation).
- Dental disease, which is very common; brush teeth and have regular checks.
- Low blood sugar in puppies, so regular small meals are important.
- Collapsing trachea and heart problems in some dogs.
- Soft spot on the skull (molera): handle the head gently; ask your vet.
Ask about the puppy's parents and any health records that exist, and book a vet check soon after your puppy comes home. Keeping your dog at a healthy weight and having regular check-ups is the best thing you can do.
Feeding and puppy care
Toy puppies have tiny stomachs and can drop their blood sugar if they go too long without food, so they usually eat four to five very small meals a day while young. Ask your vet about a small-breed puppy food and never skip meals. If a puppy seems weak, shivery or wobbly, contact a vet straight away.
Your vet will set your puppy's vaccination and deworming schedule. Puppies usually start their vaccines at around six to eight weeks, with boosters a few weeks apart, so ask us which vaccines and dewormers have already been given and when the next ones are due. We will always tell you the puppy's real age and what it has been eating.
Chihuahua puppy price in Delhi NCR
There is no single price for a Chihuahua puppy, and be careful of anyone who quotes one without asking questions. What you pay depends on the puppy's size, coat type, colour, lineage and records, health checks and current availability, and not just how small it is. Prices can change from one litter to the next.
Remember the price of the puppy is only the start. Plan for food, vaccines, vet visits, grooming, warm bedding and dental care, which matters a lot for small mouths. A puppy priced far below what others ask is worth questioning: ask where it was born, how old it really is and what records exist.
Message or call us and we will share what is available for this breed right now, what is included, and what we can and cannot show you. You can meet the puppy by appointment before you decide.
Is a Chihuahua right for you?
A Chihuahua may suit you if you want a small, loyal companion, will handle it gently, and can train and socialise it patiently.
You may want a different breed if you have very young children, want a calm dog that welcomes strangers, or cannot keep a tiny dog warm and cool at the right times. In that case another breed might fit better, and we will tell you honestly.
